Why this business cleans the way it does
Cleaner Carpet Naturally was already a working carpet cleaning business when the products it used stopped being an option at home. This is what happened, told by Kevin.
The story
My wife, Christine, was severely exposed to chemicals, and afterwards she developed Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.
It got worse as time went on. It reached the point where I could not come near her when I got home from work. Whatever was left on my clothes and my skin from the day was enough to make her ill — nausea and muscle pain that could put her in bed for days at a time. I was carrying my own working day into my own house, and it was hurting the person I was coming home to.
Then the same cleaning agents I had used for years started affecting me too.
So we rebuilt it. Not the sign on the van — the method. We went through what we were putting down on people’s floors and moved to products that were safer to be around, and we changed how the job finishes. The last pass is now a True Rinse: clean water, with nothing added to it. Less detergent stays behind in the pile, so there is less of it left in the house after we drive away.
Christine is the reason that standard exists. If a job would not be done in our own house, it does not get done in yours.
The part we did not expect
The phone started ringing differently. People with allergies. People with sensitivities of their own, who had been quietly putting off having their carpet cleaned because of how the house felt afterwards. Parents thinking about the floor their children spend all day on. And plenty of people who simply wanted to move away from harsh cleaners and did not know who to call.
We had rebuilt the business to keep it alive. It turned out a lot of other households had been waiting for someone to do exactly that.
How we work now
Gentler products, and better equipment behind them
Softer cleaning agents only get you so far on their own. The rest of it is the machine. We work from truck-mounted professional equipment and clean by hot water extraction, running a rotary extractor through open areas and high-traffic lanes so the pile is worked from every direction rather than one.
The tools carry teflon glides. They retrieve more water, so the carpet is drier when we leave, and there is less risk of marking floors, baseboards and furnishings on the way through the house.
Then the True Rinse. Finishing with detergent still in the line is like running your clothes through the washer, stopping it after the wash cycle, and putting them straight in the dryer. Rinsing it out means the carpet is not stiff or crunchy, and there is less sitting in the pile to attract the next lot of soil — so longer between cleans.
The honest part
Sometimes a spot needs something stronger
We are not going to tell you that every mark on every floor comes out with the gentle option. Some spots need a product we would not otherwise reach for.
When that happens we stop and ask you first, and we tell you what it is for. If you would rather we did not, we do not. If you say yes, that area then gets several extra True Rinse passes to take the product back out of the carpet.
Given who we clean for, we would rather lose the stain than surprise you with what we used on it.
